The workshop explores the potential local resources, their re-interpretation and valorization through the design, prototyping and auto-production of small furniture in local Ferula.
A spontaneous plant very common in Sardinia and in the south Mediterranean area, Ferula Communis is a local resource used traditionally to produce proto-craft furniture, stools, small chairs, today almost forgotten.
The workshop will take place between Alghero and Ittiri, from 11 to 18 september 2017.
Workshop activities will be held in italian and english.
Students who attended the full workshop will be rewarded with 2 CFU.
We welcome students form other universities but due to organizational constraints we can guarantee them only a limited number of places. In order to apply please send us a cv/resume and information about your actual academic affiliation specifying you are not a UNISS student.
Students that are not for the University of Sassari will have to take out an insurance covering general risks: our University cannot take any responsibility for anything that may occur to the workshop's participants. To have a personal insurance coverage is a requirement for any non UNISS students.
Re-thinking local knowledge as a major asset and using design as a vehicle to combine tradition with innovation …
By Tibor Uhrin (University di Kosice, Slovakia) and Marco Sironi (Uniss)
The workshop aims at re-thinking possible designs for Ferula, as a model for to bring back value to a local traditional resource, highlighting its strong ties between the area from which it originates, the local rural economy through the exploration of its plastic expressive potential – between its natural and spontaneous shape and the geometric regularity resulting form mechanical processes – and the experimentation of ways to combine it structural shapes in innovative ways.
The workshop activities include a preliminary research phase, aimed at focusing the possible main design trajectories, and a design phase based on a direct and constructive approach.

Associate Professor in Design at Kosice Technical University, Slovakia, where he is Head in the design Department.
Tibor’s work either as a researcher and as designer revolves around the combination of traditional techniques, design and innovation, looking for new possibilities through a continuous experimentation with materials, technologies and construction.
